Ultimately, goals are about ourselves and how we go about accomplishing those things in our lives which we deeply desire and want to achieve. Whether it is receiving a college degree, starting that new business you’ve always dreamed about, or even seeking to know what God thinks, goals are about you. They are YOURS.
Goal setting and achievement is at the core of our human advancement, whether that is individually or collectively. By our very natures we seek to do things, make things happen, produce things and move our existence forward. It’s in our blood; in our genes and in every other part of what we are. It is impossible to avoid goal setting because it is in each and every one of us.
Goals and working towards accomplishing those goals is basic and practical human nature. Many reasons exists why human being are goal seekers, an important one of which is that we are happiest when we are working towards something meaningful that improves our lives and the lives of our loved ones. It’s quite a natural instinct!
Goals are the aim for something or an object you wish to obtain.
Realistically, goal setting is about what you want from life. Imagine that in detail if you can.
What do you want from life?
How would your life be like if you achieved this goal?
How would it feel to achieve this goal?
What difference would it make to your family and friends if you could achieve this goal?
In goal setting, you can enable your conscious and unconscious mind to work together to start making a mental action plan. Once you have started goal setting you will probably be surprised to see how you will begin to work out the practical steps you need to take in order to achieve your goals. The more you bear your goal in mind, the more you will find yourself thinking of ways to achieve what you want to achieve.
When successful people work to achieve their goals they will find that their skills and abilities incrementally. The more you work to achieve one step along the way to a goal, the more things you make possible for yourself.
Life is a succession of goals which basically translates into a journey. A journey is something that should be enjoyed and savored. But every journey does have its difficult moments and times. It is these difficult times that can most often be out greatest teacher. Another quality of most of us is that we do learn from our mistakes, and every successful person does. And besides, you’ll be surprised with the things you can learn and the fun you can have along the way.
Goals are essential to achieve success because they keep us focused and motivated. Without goals we would aimlessly go down the path of life without any direction, ambition, or hope. Goals are not only something we aim to achieve, but are also markers that let us know we are doing the right things to get ourselves to places we want to be. If you can see yourself moving along the right path and making progress toward your ultimate goals, you should feel more motivated and be more successful.
Let’s look at some goal setting strategies to help us achieve success.
Know What You Want To Accomplish
The most important thing about goal setting for success is to know what you want to accomplish. Some people might think this is obvious and perhaps it is, but you’d be surprised by the number of people who have no clue as to what they want to do with their life. If you don’t know what it is you want to accomplish then there is no way you can begin to even think about setting goals. Thus knowing what you want to do is the most important element to goal setting.
Start Small
Every major goal consists of a series of smaller goals. For example, if your goal is to get a college degree there are things you will have to do to get it such as selecting a college, taking entrance examinations, enrolling, etc. These are all the smaller or short-term goals that will lead you to the main goal of receiving a college degree. And often smaller goals such as these consist of even smaller goals.
Once you know your primary goal you will want to make a list of the short-term goals you will need to accomplish to get to your main goal. A list like this is the first step to developing your plan and becomes like a road map directing you along your way. Without a plan or map it is easy for us to get lost or take the wrong turn on our journey.
Deadlines
All good plans operate on a timeline that has within specific deadlines to accomplish certain things. Big businesses always use timeline and deadlines, that’s one reason they are able to grow. Your goal too can be seen as a business venture. On your list of short-term goals you should specify, in realistic terms, the deadlines you wish to have each one completed within. But be realistic and flexible in defining these deadline dates, as things do happen in life that could delay the accomplishment of certain steps. Back to the college degree as an example; perhaps you are six units short of receiving your degree, but the classes you need to take won’t be available until the following semester. This is something out of your immediate control but does affect you completing your education by the deadline you had noted in your plan.
Rewards
Life is a journey and it is not a simple cliché to say that it is the journey that matters, not the destination. You should take time each day or at least regularly, to recognize what you have achieved and to take pride in that. If you never do that, you won’t be living a happy life so what will be the point in going for these goals anyway?
Recognizing your achievements are rewarding yourself buoys up your confidence and makes further, more ambitious goal setting possible.
